ABSTRACT

Health is the centre of human enlightenment. Due to the recent Covid outbreak and several environmental pollutions, checking one's vitals regularly has become a necessity. Ours is an IoT-based device that measures a user's heart rate, blood oxygen level and body temperature. The device is compact and portable, making it easy for users to wear. The readings are measured and shown on an OLED display with the help of sensors. The data is also available on the cloud. A webpage and a mobile application were developed to view the data from the cloud. Individual graphs of the vitals with time are available on the mobile application. This can be used for progress measurement and statistical analyses. Authorized personnel can access the patient's vitals. This creates a scope for Tele-medication in rural and underdeveloped regions. Besides, one can also view his/her vitals for personal health routine. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

A new coronavirus infection caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus is characterized by a systemic hyperinflammatory response with a pronounced increase in the content of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Materials and methods. The study was conducted on the basis of the Samara Regional Children's Infectious Diseases Hospital from 2021 to 2022. 40 patients with moderate (n = 20, group I) and severe forms (n = 20, group II) COVID-19 were studied, the comparison group consisted of patients with viral pneumonia of another etiology (n = 35, group III). Results. The infectious agent SARS-CoV-2 induces high levels of cytokines IL-6 (p < 0.005), IL-8 (p < 0.05) and a slight increase in TNF-alpha (p < 0.05). IL-8 was significantly associated with disease duration (p < 0.01). We assume that the value of this interleukin will increase in the post-COVID period. Conclusions. Changes in IL-6 and IL-8 levels in patients with COVID-19, along with clinical features, are important biomarkers for predicting the severity and duration of the disease.Copyright © Children Infections.All rights reserved

ABSTRACT

The ongoing COVID-19 epidemic has had a great impact on social activities and the economy. The usage technical analysis tools to provide a more accurate and efficient reference for epidemic control measures is of great significance. This paper analyzes the characteristics and deficiencies of the existing technical methods, such as regression model, simulation calculation, differential equation and so on. By analyzing past outbreak cases and comparing the epidemic prevention measures of different cities, we discuss the importance of early and timely prevention in controlling the epidemic, and the importance of analyzing and formulating plans in advance. We then make the key observation that the spread of the virus is related to the topology of the urban network. This paper further proposes an epidemic analysis model of the optimized PageRank model, and gives a ranking algorithm for virus transmission risk levels based on road nodes, forming a visual risk warning level map, and applies the algorithm to the epidemic analysis of Yuegezhuang area in Beijing. Finally, more in-depth research directions and suggestions for prevention and control measures are put forward. © 2023 SPIE.

ABSTRACT

The SARS-CoV-2 virus triggered a never-before-seen scenario worldwide. Ecuador declared a state of emergency to contain coronavirus transmission by applying social isolation policies and mobility limitations. During this period, noise pollution decreased in Guayaquil city. This study proposes the use of smartphones to collect noise data and generate soundscape maps of Guayaquil during different time slots. The results revealed traffic as the predominant type of noise, followed by vehicles, buses, and people´s voices. This article demonstrates the feasibility of crowdsourcing for the collection of environmental variables. © 2022 National Institute for Space Research, INPE. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

Nowadays, manufacturing companies face more difficulties than ever. Unrest in global supply chains triggered by fluctuating customer demand, raw material shortages and crises (Covid pandemic, global warming, wars) complicate the utilization of production resources necessary for economic success. Also, the rapidly changing environment causes existing production plans to be adapted, which results in order changes, causing additional costs for manufacturers. One solution to cope with these problems is cooperation and sharing resources: requesting capacity from partners when having shortages and offering them temporarily in case of excess capacity. In this paper, a platform-based resource sharing mechanism is investigated from the economic perspective. In the mechanism, requests and offers are matched by a central platform applying a complex matching logic. The platform provides valid alternatives based on the incoming ordersthat the requesting company can choose from. Companies are rating each other's performance after each interaction based on delivery accuracy;choosing between resource offers is made based on the cumulated rating about the offeror and the price of the offer. Within this paper, the aim is to investigate the resource sharing mechanism from the economic point of view based on an approach to the responsiveness of a supply chain structure to turbulence, to support decision-makers trying to cope with unexpected changes. For this purpose, here the mechanism is briefly introduced, and basic concepts about turbulences in supply chains are also presented. Cost types related to resource sharing manufacturing companies are distinguished, and the model is validated with agent-based simulation. A simulation experiment is performed to investigate the use-case of outsourced jobs having different price levels. Based on the experiment, it can be concluded that there is a price level limit in such a resource sharing federation, under which it is worth it to collaborate with partners by outsourcing certain jobs to them. © 2022 Authors. ABSTRACT

How is online tertiary education opening the student/teacher mind-set, particularly during the transitional learning/teaching process? The question is tested through a country-wide survey of students/teachers conducted against Independent University, Bangladesh's (IUB's) own transition. Students reported two broad changes: (a) micro-level infrastructural and resource issues resonating with macro-level interventions;and (b) the quality of learning vis-à-vis teaching amid-online platform transition merely exacerbating both teacher-level and student-level pressures. ABSTRACT

At the end of 2019 the first cases of SARS-CoV-2-associated pneumonia were reported in China. Consequently, the World Health Organization (WHO) named it COVID-19 and in January 2020, it declared the international health emergency due to the worldwide rapid spread of the infection. The first cases in Argentina were detected in early March 2020. Molecular tests like RT PCR and LAMP were immediately used. Serological tests for antibody detection were approved a few months later;however, these are still not the preferred diagnostic method for the disease. In our laboratory, the latter began to be used during the first wave of COVID-19. With the results obtained in that moment, an observational retrospective study in a cohort of patients who came voluntarily to test for SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies and whose results were positive was performed. The notification rate to the Argentine Integrated System for Health Information (SISA for its acronym in Spanish) was calculated and antibody levels were evaluated, clustering them according to the following facts: if the event had been notified to the SISA and if they had a previous RT PCR/LAMP result, the symptoms experienced by these patients and the time elapsed between RT PCR/LAMP and antibody test results. It was not possible to demonstrate differences between patients with detectable and undetectable RT PCR/LAMP, neither with the type of declared symptoms nor with respect to the days elapsed post-infection. However, it was found that there was a significant difference between notified and non-notified patients, and a high rate of non-notified patients with positive antibodies. Therefore, antibodies level might be considered as a surrogate marker of SARS-CoV-2 contact when a diagnosis through molecular methods is not available.

From satellites to ground-based sensors, as well as mobile networks of monitors, the availability of massive data sets has increased the need for educating students in data literacy in order to ensure their competency in the global market (Bluhm et al. 2020;Gibson and Mourad 2018). The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines environmental justice as, "... the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income, with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies." According to Lacombe, more individuals die yearly from car exhaust (53,000) in the United States than road casualties (37,400). Students worked in groups to discuss their assumptions about factors they perceived to have an impact on air pollution levels (e.g., affluence, traffic, and vegetation).

The importance of physical activity, as one of the crucial resources for maintaining and improving physical health, was diminished during the Covid-19 pandemic. Except for the impact it has on physical health, physical activity may have various psychological benefits, especially during the development period of adolescence. The current findings of physical activity show that adolescents are more physically inactive during the pandemic than usual. Also, there are increasingly negative psychological outcomes in adolescents. The purpose of this study was to explore the levels of physical activity, negative affectivity, coping and preoccupation with the pandemic in an adolescent sample. The study involved 2409 adolescents (53.5% girls, 46.5% boys) from elementary and high schools aged 10 to 19. The Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) was applied, and information about levels of physical activity, coping and preoccupation with pandemic and isolation measures were collected. Participants answered on a Likert-type scale. Findings of this research show that on average male adolescents are more likely to engage in physical activities than females. Also, a relation of physical inactivity distress and preoccupation was obtained for adolescent girls. No similar finding was found for males. However, very high physical activity (five or more times a week) was a protective factor for coping and preoccupation with coronavirus infection. The conclusion of this research indicates that levels of physical activity have a different effect on male and female adolescents during the Covid-19 pandemic. It can be concluded that female adolescents that are less physically active are more at risk of depression, anxiety and stress. © 2023 Montenegrin Sports Academy. All rights reserved.

We present data from two studies examining how COVID-19 restrictions affected health behaviours (alcohol consumption, diet, sleep quality, and physical activity levels), mental wellbeing (negative mood) and cognitive function (decision making, attention, learning, working memory, and time perception) in association with sociodemographic factors. Study 1 assessed participants in Scotland and presents cognitive function data for five timepoints. Study 2 is transnational, assessing participants in Scotland and Japan. Data are stored as CSV files. Reuse may involve examining further effects of pandemic enforced social isolation or serve as baseline data when assessing social isolation in expeditions or ageing. BackgroundPrevious studies have shown that using a finger prick as the primary method for blood withdrawal is an efficient way to collect blood samples remotely, and data on blood levels from a finger prick are directly comparable to that obtained by a venepuncture. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we therefore complemented our large digital research platform with serum collection via a home finger prick testing in order to collect samples without the need of visits to a hospital. This repeatedly enabled us to rapidly answer new and relevant clinical research questions about COVID-19, thereby showing the potential of the finger prick for research purposes. However, the use of finger pricks in a research or clinical practice setting is still uncommon, and not yet tested on a large scale. In addition, there is limited data on peoples' willingness and ability to successfully use the finger prick at home, especially in patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases (iRD) who may have impaired hand function.ObjectivesTo investigate the feasibility of finger prick testing in combination with a digital research platform by evaluating the success rate and patients' perspective towards the use of the finger prick.MethodsData were collected from an ongoing prospective cohort study including patients with iRD from the Amsterdam Rheumatology & immunology Center and healthy controls. Serum samples were collected up to eight times during follow-up via blood withdrawal by venepuncture at the local research institute or via a finger prick that could be performed at home. For the latter option, participants were instructed to collect three drops of blood, which would yield approximately 40-80 µL of serum after clotting. All study participants were questioned about their preference for a particular sampling method for individual healthcare and for scientific research. Participants who received a finger prick test before June 26, 2021, were asked to complete a digital evaluation questionnaire of the finger prick after their attempt. The finger prick was defined as failed when less than 10 µL of serum could be recovered from the collection device, or if no sample was returned to the laboratory and participants indicated in the questionnaires that they did not succeed in collecting the required amount of serum.ResultsA total of 3080 patients with iRD and 1102 healthy controls were included in the study. Of these, 2135 (69%) patients and 899 (82%) controls attempted to execute at least one finger prick, and 1439 (67%) patients and 712 (21%) controls executed multiple finger pricks. The first finger prick was successfully done by 92% (CI 90 – 93) of iRD patients, 94% (CI 92 – 95) of healthy controls, 93% (CI: 92 – 94) of all participants aged 70 years or younger, and 89% (CI 86 – 92) of all participants aged above 70 years (Table 1). Sex did not impact these success rates. Repeated failure occurred in 11 of 1439 (0.8%) patients and 4 of 712 (0.6%) controls. The two most common reasons for perceived failure of the finger prick were related to insufficient blood yield when applying the finger prick. Finally, both patients and controls were less willing to perform a finger prick for individual healthcare compared to scientific research;31% of patients and 61% of controls were willing to perform a finger prick for scientific research compared to 19% of patients and 39% of controls for healthcare. The most important reason for this was lower confidence in the execution and laboratory measurements when blood was drawn via a venepuncture compared to a finger prick.ConclusionIn this study, we demonstrated that the vast majority of participants, among which elderly and patients of whom hand function may be impaired by an underlying rheumatic disease, were able to successfully draw the required amount of blood for serological analyses. This shows that the finger prick testing is suitable for a high-throughput implementation to monitor patients remotely, which will likely contribute to improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of b th healthcare and scientific research.REFERENCES:NIL.Acknowledgements:NIL.Disclosure of InterestsNone Declared.

ABSTRACT

Some problems of Filipino farmers in Nueva Ecija are irrigation systems and labor shortage. Most of them are unable to work due to old age while others chose to stop because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, irrigation systems have been an issue due to the lack of resources such as continuous water supply and control. Fortunately, there is a progression of smart farming in the country which could assist in optimizing farming processes. This study presents a systematic literature survey on rice farming technologies and challenges. This study also aims to help address these problems by creating a rice irrigation system that introduces a water level control system. The system was comprised of a mobile application, Arduino ESP32 module, and a tank with water level sensors. The mobile application was used to set the desired water level while the proportional- integral-derivative (PID) controller adjusted the water level automatically. When current water level is lower than the setpoint, the valves to the tank will open. Tank specifications were used to come up with a transfer function for the system. The proposed design was simulated in MATLAB Simulink and PID parameters were tuned to enhance system performance. The tuned control system obtained an output response with less overshoot and faster settling time. © 2022 IEEE.

School nurse administrators increasingly express concerns over the availability of substitute school nurses with return to in-person learning after the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. While healthcare staffing concerns and shortages are not unique to the school setting, the increasing health acuity of the student population, delegation principles, and staffing models complicate the issue. Traditional methods of covering absences may no longer suffice. In this article, five school nurse administrators share strategies, comparing pre-pandemic to current day facilitation of providing coverage for the absences of their healthcare staff.

ABSTRACT

Health counseling is a prevention and health promotion action, especially in the context of a pandemic, for both preventing disease and maintaining health. Inequalities may affect receipt of health counseling. The aim was to provide an overview of the prevalence of receiving counseling and to analyze income inequality in the receipt of health counseling. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional telephone survey study with individuals aged 18 years or older with diagnosis of symptomatic COVID-19 using RT-PCR testing between December 2020 and March 2021. They were asked about receipt of health counseling. Inequalities were assessed using the Slope Index of Inequality (SII) and Concentration Index (CIX) measures. We used the Chi-square test to assess the distribution of outcomes according to income. Adjusted analyses were performed using Poisson regression with robust variance adjustment. RESULTS: A total of 2919 individuals were interviewed. Low prevalence of health counseling by healthcare practitioner was found. Participants with higher incomes were 30% more likely to receive more counseling. CONCLUSIONS: These results serve as a basis for aggregating public health promotion policies, in addition to reinforcing health counseling as a multidisciplinary team mission to promote greater health equity.

ABSTRACT

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to determine the factors associated with decreased physical activity levels among community residents over a long-term observation period during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. [Participants and Methods] We conducted a cross-sectional study using a self-administered questionnaire and daily steps as an indicator of physical activity levels. The study population consisted of 704 community-dwelling residents aged 40 years and older who participated in the health program from 2019 to 2020. We compared the daily steps from March-December 2019 to March-December 2020 and performed multivariate analysis to identify the factors associated with decreased daily steps. [Results] Of all participants, 447 (63.5%) returned the questionnaire and 309 (43.9%) were included in the analysis. During the COVID-19 pandemic, 133 (43.0%) respondents had decreased physical activity levels. The multivariate analysis showed that working (odds ratio, 2.08; 95% confidence interval, 1.10-3.94) was significantly associated with decreased daily steps during the COVID-19 pandemic. [Conclusion] There was a significant association between decreased physical activity levels and working during the COVID-19 pandemic. When restrictive measures such as teleworking are implemented, it may be necessary to take measures to prevent a decline in physical activity levels.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way business is handled. Besides, people's purchasing habits have been impacted by new safety, social, and health restrictions. Thus, the purpose of this research was to analyze the COVID-19 pandemic impact in the relationships between the built environment, price level, and service quality on supermarket customers' satisfaction. For this purpose, a survey of 245 supermarket customers in southern Brazil was conducted at two different times: before and during the pandemic. The results point out that the price level, toilets, and location are essential to explain satisfaction at all times. Comfort presented importance before the pandemic, configuration, and service quality in pandemic times. These features are essential for supermarket management to prioritize efforts on attributes and dimensions relevant to customers.

ABSTRACT

To investigate the sufficiency of ventilation during the COVID-19 pandemic for school children, a field study was conducted in 37 classrooms of 11 Dutch secondary schools between October 2020 and June 2021. All the classrooms were visited twice, before and after a three-month national lockdown, when different measures against COVID-19 were taken by the schools. For each visit, both CO2 concentrations and air temperature were measured during school hours, and detailed information on building/classroom characteristics, occupancy, and COVID-19 measures was collected. Results show that before the lockdown, CO2 concentrations in most classrooms exceeded the threshold levels of the Dutch Fresh Schools guidelines. The significantly lower CO2 concentrations measured after the lockdown, however, were mainly due to the decreased occupancy. Moreover, with windows and doors always being opened on purpose, the performance of different ventilation regimes could not be compared, while such behaviour may also lead to thermal discomfort for school children. © 2022 17th International Conference on Indoor Air Quality and Climate, INDOOR AIR 2022. ABSTRACT

IntroductionFavipiravir selectively inhibits RNA polymerase responsible for single-stranded viral replication. It is licensed for treating influenza and repurposed to treat other diseases such as Ebola and COVID-19. It is metabolised by hepatic aldehyde oxidase (AO) and is an AO inhibitor with complex pharmacokinetics. We have used favipiravir, in combination with other antivirals, in severely immunocompromised children with life-threatening RNA virus infections. As an unlicensed indication, favipiravir pharmacokinetics were routinely monitored at our institution. Population pharmacokinetic model is used to describe the favipiravir pharmacokinetic properties, drug exposure and sources of variability in these children.MethodsRoutine favipiravir plasma levels of 9 patients (0.8–11yrs, mean age=5.3yrs;median weight=15kg) were analysed retrospectively (62 samples). All patients received favipiravir 200mg or 400mg tds and had at least one plasma level 45min (peak), 3h and 8h (trough) post-dose. Parameter estimation and model simulation properties (visual predictive check) were assessed using R language (v 4.1.2) and RStudio (2022.02.0+443).ResultsA one-compartment model with weight as covariate best describes the data, with (1) elimination clearance=1L/h and volume of distribution=7.54L, both allometric scaled centring at median weight, and (2) estimated t1/2=5.17h with Cmax = 24µg/mL at 200mg and 41µg/mL at 400mg.ConclusionsTo our knowledge this is the first report of favipiravir pharmacokinetic parameters in infants and young children. Weight significantly improves the model fit as a covariate. Reported EC50 for norovirus in vitro was 19–39µg/mL and enterovirus 71 was 23µg/mL, indicating higher favipiravir doses or combination with other antivirals are required.

When the pandemic was at its peak, it was a quite difficult task for the government to schedule vaccine supply in various districts of a state. This task became further difficult when vaccines were required to be supplied to various Covid Vaccination Centers (CVCs) at a granular level. This is because there was no data regarding the trend being acquired at each CVC and the population distribution is non-uniform across the district. This led to the arousal of an ambiguous situation for a certain period and hence mismanagement. Now that we have sufficient data across each CVC, we can work on a time series analysis of vaccine requirements in which we can essentially forecast the number of administered doses and optimize the wastage at all atomic CVC levels. © 2023 IEEE.
